Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Entrepreneurship is increasingly being recognized as a key driver of economic growth, and digital media plays an essential role in promoting entrepreneurial activities in Nigeria. In Makurdi Local Government Area, Benue State, digital media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn have become vital tools for entrepreneurs looking to expand their businesses. These platforms allow entrepreneurs to market their products and services to a wider audience, access resources, network with potential investors, and learn about best practices in business management. According to research by Adefolalu & Bello (2024), digital media provides significant opportunities for entrepreneurs in rural and semi-urban areas, enabling them to scale their operations and reach national and international markets. This study investigates the role of digital media in promoting entrepreneurship development in Makurdi, focusing on how digital tools contribute to the success and growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the region.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While digital media presents many opportunities for entrepreneurship development, there are challenges to its effective utilization in Makurdi. Factors such as limited internet access, digital illiteracy, and insufficient infrastructure can hinder entrepreneurs from fully benefiting from digital platforms. Furthermore, many entrepreneurs in the region may not be fully aware of how to leverage digital media for business growth. This study seeks to explore how digital media is used by entrepreneurs in Makurdi and assess the impact it has on their business development and growth.
